[La] «Résistance à l'usure par frottement réciproque» [...] est également appelée «attrition» et s'observe en particulier dans les corps de chaussée constitués en macadam c'est-à-dire à l'aide d'éléments de dimensions voisines [...] On utilise l'essai Deval qui consiste à introduire 44 pierres de 7 cm pesant 5 kg, dans un cylindre tournant autour d'un axe horizontal, mais monté incliné sur cet axe [...] On fait tourner le cylindre pendant 5 heures, de façon qu'il parcourt 10,000 tours. On pèse ensuite le poids "P" de détritus et d'éléments fins recueillis. Le coefficient Deval s'exprime par le rapport 400/P P étant exprimé en grammes.
